Gaza emerges as a fortified Canaanite settlement on the Via Maris — the great coastal highway linking Egypt to the Levant. Its strategic position at the crossroads of empires sets the stage for millennia of commerce and cultural exchange.
Known as the seat of Dagon's temple, Gaza flourishes as one of the five Philistine city-states. It becomes a maritime power, trading cedar, spices, and textiles across the Mediterranean world.
Under Byzantine rule, Gaza transforms into a thriving center of learning and rhetoric. Its schools of oratory attract scholars from across the empire, and its port exports grain, wine, and the legendary Gaza wine in decorated amphorae.
